Tot Camp 2016: God’s Creation

This year for the month of July (and late August if we don’t finish before travel in early August ), we’re going to focus on learning all about God’s creation. I have a few resources that I’ll reference for you below as I describe our plan.

First is this book, Catechism for Young Children. It lists the first 30 questions of the shorter catechism (“a summary of the principles of Christian religion in the form of questions and answers, used for the instruction of Christians”).

We’re just going to do the first couple of questions this month in Tot Camp, but our family plans to continue using this book throughout our family Bible times during this next season.

Week 1:

Question: Who made you?

Answer: God!

Bible Reference:

For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.”

Psalm 139: 13-14 (Memorize part in bold)

SongThe Butterfly Song

Activities:

Option 1: God Made Me Special printable (for my preschooler)

Option 2: Draw ourselves on this blank person printable and talk about each detail that God made (for my younger ones)

Option 3: God Made Me Special fingerprint activity (and study our fingerprints with magnifying glasses to see how different they are)

Outside option: Chalk body outlines (Child lays down. Outline body with chalk. Let child use chalk to decorate their chalk outline body.)

Weeks 2, 3, and 4:

Question: What else did God make?

Answer: God made all things!

Bible Reference: Genesis 1 – Genesis 2:3

Activities: To learn about creation in a more in-depth way, we’re going to create this book by the Happy Home Fairy. It’s really cute and has a page for each day of creation. It even has printables with a little song to help the kids remember all that God created. In order to finish a little quicker, we’ll do two pages a day.

Song: “God Made Everything” sing with instruments (and also review last week’s song)

Memory Verse: “WORTHY ARE YOU, OUR LORD AND GOD, TO RECEIVE GLORY AND HONOR AND POWER, FOR YOU CREATED ALL THINGS, AND BY YOUR WILL THEY EXISTED AND WERE CREATED.” REVELATION 4:11

Week 2: Day/Night and Sky/Clouds (Genesis 1:1-8)

Bible Reading: In addition to reading from the ESV scripture listed above, we’ll also probably read the whole story in The Jesus Storybook Bible each week to reinforce their understanding of the whole story and to make the language a little more developmentally appropriate.

*Review our songs and memory verses

Activity: Day 1 and 2 pages in our creation book

Week 3: Land/Plants and Sun/Moon/Stars (Genesis 1:9-19)

Bible Reading: ESV scripture listed above, review whole story in JSB

*Review our songs and memory verses

Activity: Day 3 and 4 pages in our creation book

Week 4: Fish/Birds and Creatures on land/People (Genesis 1:20-31)

Bible Reading: ESV scripture listed above, review whole story in JSB

*Review our songs and memory verses

Activity: Day 5 and 6 pages in our creation book

Wrap up week: Day of Rest (Genesis 2:1-3)

Activity: Day 7 in our book

*Review our songs and memory verses

Snack: Creation Trail Mix (as a review and celebration)

Finally, we’ll read our creation books and thank God for all he has made!
