Tot School – Spring – Butterflies

butterfly

So Tot School planning has taken a bit of a backseat during this past month or so due to lack of sleep. My newborn is a joy, but he’s had a hard time sleeping at night, which means my one pocket of kid-free time during the day is used for other essential tasks – such as showering, spending time with Jesus, or sleeping. I think we’re coming out of “survival mode” and so I wanted to plan a little Tot School unit for Fairley based on her current interest, caterpillars turning to butterflies.

My mom sent her a live butterfly garden, and we’re currently watching the caterpillars eat and eat and grow really fat!!! This is going to be a quick unit since we leave for Texas in a few weeks, but I figured we could start by getting a variety of books on the topic and maybe do a few other little learning activities along the way. We probably won’t get to all of these things but wantedto plan a (semi-) full unit in case YOU wanted to do it all!

Here’s the plan:

Bible Verse: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW creation! The old has gone; the new has come!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Song:
The fuzzy little caterpillar went up into a tree,
spun his cocoon and then he went to sleep.
While he was sleeping he dreamed that he could fly,
when he woke up (sigh) he was a butterfly.
Letters:
-We learn and review letters in lots of different ways these days. We might focus on Bb (and could use these flashcards), or we might not! 🙂
Colors:
-Same with colors – we discuss them during all of our activities, and she seems to know them all now!
Art:
Life Cycle Activity – from totsandme.blogspot.com
Dramatic Play:
-Adding butterflies to our spring sensory bin (and also flowers and seeds to plant, etc.)
Science/Sequencing:
Math:
Building Butterflies (Shapes) – from theprincessandthetot.blogspot.ca
In this book, Caterpillar meets a bird, dragonfly, bee & butterfly.  He wishes he could fly like them.  Of course, at the end, his wish comes true.
Super Tot will be locating the shapes listed on each blue card and building a butterfly using those shapes (see example).
(Remember to discuss symmetry!)
Field Trip:
Butterfly Conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History (or another cheaper option if I can find one)
Snack:
Butterfly Life Cycle Muffin Tin – from totsandme.blogspot.com
Here is our Butterfly Life Cycle Muffin Tin

The girls had:
Tapioca pudding as we thought the tapioca sort of looked like little butterfly eggs.
Cottage cheese eggs on a spinach leaf.
Fruit-kabob caterpillars (blueberries and grape slices)
Carrot slice caterpillar
Crescent roll chrysalis (we filled it with an apple piece shaped like a caterpillar).
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut in half diagonally and shaped like a butterfly with orange bell pepper antennae.
